How much glitzier can you get right? But is glitter really a luxury texture? It shines, sparkles, commands attention and it’s exciting!

Glitter and all of its derivatives are attention getters, that’s a given. Still, they don’t have to be overwhelming. There comes a time when we all say, it’ just needs an extra pop, enter vibrant colors, glitter, gold and lux textures to rescue us from the drab mundane world of minimalistic flat designs. I love minimal design, it allows you to perfect every element to the finite detail, Still, even the most conservative brand can get stale at times. With that said, we all don’t have the love for glitter Liberace had.

Follow along with me as I design glitter from scratch in this video all about creating glitter in Photoshop.

Tips to Help You Use Luxury Textures in your design

Visual Weight

Pay Attention to Visual Weight of luxury textures. Don’t underestimate the power of subtle shimmer. Metallic texture especially is a luxury element that lends well to any design from feminine chic to hard masculine and industrial looks. Shimmer can be very corporate and serious depending on the visual weight you give to each element. There must be a balance.

Think outside the box

Don’t box luxury textures in with feminine designs. Likewise, glitter should not be boxed in with childish or loud designs. We tend to have a strong association with specific materials and textures. Thinking outside these conformities can give you a better design.

Using Luxury Textures to Guide the Eye

Use texture and pattern to create areas of interest to guide the eye to particular focal points. Shimmering luxury textures command attention, you can use that to your advantage with design layout. Using emphasis to draw the eye to your focus with strategic layouts. Here is a good article about how to use emphasis in design.

How Color Affects Metallic & Shimmer texture

Pay attention to how other colors affect your luxury textures, shimmery textures in particular. Dark colors will bring out and emphasis a shimmery texture whereas light colors defuse the drama a little.

  • On corporate designs, you’ll see small shimmer accents on large amounts of dark color.
  • For a Feminine design, you tend to see the shimmer in larger quantities with lighter backgrounds.
  • Masculine design tends to use gold, platinum and other metallics with dark colors not necessarily in small quantities. Automotive design typically uses lots of textures like brushed metal and diamond plate.
  • Children’s designs use glitter and shimmer to achieve a childlike whimsical look. You will see this in products for preteens and young girls. This is definitely the sweet spot for glitz and glitter textures. For whimsical designs pair luxury textures like glitter and shimmer with vibrant colors and whimsical patterns. High-contrast, visually stimulating patterns feel disorienting for adults but babies love light reflection and tons of contrast. Designing toy and children’s packaging with glitter and vibrant colors catches attention from the right audience.

Is big and busy the only way to stand out and be seen?

If you’re not into flashy sparkles in your design don’t count it out just yet.

You can use luxury textures in a minimalist design. I know that sounds outrageous but it’s not. Simple gold accents or a touch of shimmer to an otherwise flat design can have a major impact on the overall design when it’s done right. By right, I mean simple lines and small accents, very subtle.

When it comes to luxury textures and minimalist design they can coexist but you have to learn the right balance.

Is there a balance between a glitzy and a nice airy design?

I definitely have a double personality when it comes to design. The over the top excitement of gold and glitter get me every time. I also think less is more, how confusing is that.

Mixing glitter and glitz textures requires that you pay close attention to the balance of the design. Glitz is exciting but also overwhelming if used too much. A little goes a very long way. Unless you’re designing Christmas cards or a New Year’s Eve poster in which case we want all the glitter!
